THE $20 BALAYAGE THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.
When I first started doing balayage, I was pretty bad.
My confidence was low, and my prices... even lower.
In fact, my work was so hit or miss, that I often charged clients based on the end result, often giving heavy discounts due to my underwhelming performances.
But balayage was the trend of the hour, and everyone wanted it. So I felt obliged to offer it, so I didn't lose clients to a stylist down the street.
I figured I'd just 'fake it till I made it'.
Then, one nightmare session shifted my reality.
She was a new , walk-in client that wanted a balayage to surprise a new guy she was infatuated with.
Because I had a two-hour gap till my next appointment, I gladly invited her in. I told her I was a pro, and two hours was all I needed. Remember, fake it till you make.
Plus, I saw dollar signs. And I needed that money.
Somehow, I managed to overlook that her waist length hair was as thick as three ponytails, and her previous color was splotchy and uneven. I'd better work fast.
But it didn't go as planned. It took 7 hours.
Not only did she miss her big date, I had to reschedule my next 3 clients.
But that wasn't even the worst part.
Despite repeated application and three different toners, her hair refused to lift past a horrific shade of orange.
I was on the verge of tears, horrified at the outcome.
Barely able to meet her gaze, I swallowed my pride and sheepishly asked, "How's $20?"
THIS WAS MY BREAKING POINT.
IT WAS TIME TO STOP PRETENDING AND START BECOMING THE EXPERT I WANTED TO BE.
